Autumn is not the best time to climb scaffolding in Moscow, but it’s still better than doing it in winter. Tsar Ivan wants results, and our team will prove we are the best builders in the city. We will finish the decorative arches with the brightest stones and ensure our place on the list of the government's trusted workers.
Sheila Santos and Israel Cendrero make up the game design duo Llama Dice. They have released several titles with different Spanish publishers, and The Red Cathedral is the first game they have published with Devir. Pedro Soto and Chema Román took care of the graphic elements of the game with a great tribute to Ivan Bilibin, an iconic Russian artist from the turn of the 20th century.
The Red Cathedral is a strategic Euro board game where players take on the role of construction teams. Their task is to collaboratively build St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible. But only one of them will be able to win the Tsar's favour.
During the game, players can perform one of three actions: claim a section of the Cathedral, send resources to that section to build it, or go to the game board to acquire more resources. Each action has its own mechanism and requires players to pay attention to what the other players are doing.
When assigning sections of the Cathedral, players take possession of the spaces in each of the columns that make up their section. The more sections that are built and completed with their own tower, the more points the player will receive at the end of the game.
Players can send resources to the sections they have claimed. When they complete each of these sections, they receive rewards in money and prestige points. They can also install decorations on the completed sections to gain even more recognition from the Tsar. This also functions as a timer in the game, as when a player completes the construction of their sixth section, the game ends.
The game board shows us the iconic rondel of The Red Cathedral. It is where players acquire all the resource types needed to complete their work on the Cathedral, as well as gaining advantages from guilds and professionals to maximize their journey to the market. In the central rondel, players choose the die they want to use and move forward as many steps as the top face of the die indicates, to obtain the resources indicated in the place where the die lands.
The Red Cathedral is a very accessible game with simple rules but still offers interesting strategy. It will certainly appeal to those more interested in strategically optimizing their position in each game than in the complexity of the rules.
