The classic game of pure negotiation, Diplomacy, has taken many forms over the years. The first edition by The Avalon Hill Game Co may have had the widest distribution, but Avalon Hill re-issued the game in 1999 with a colorful new map and metal pieces. In 2008, Avalon Hill released a 50th Anniversary Edition with a new map and cardboard pieces representing armies and fleets.
In the game, players represent one of the seven "Great Powers of Europe" (Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy, Russia, or Turkey) in the years leading to World War I. The game begins in Spring 1901, and players make both Spring and Fall moves each year. There are only two types of military units: armies and fleets. Each military unit has limited options each turn: they may move into an adjacent territory, support an allied unit in an attack on an adjacent territory, support an allied unit in the defense of an adjacent territory, or hold their position. Players give orders to their units by writing down a set of "orders". The result of each turn is determined by the game's rules. There are no dice rolls or other random elements. With its incredibly simple movement mechanisms, combined with a significant negotiation element, this system is highly respected by many players.
