No king was ever so heroic, no warrior fought so bravely, no battle was lost so gloriously. King Leonidas and his 300 soldiers made the most famous sacrifice of all time when they fought the Persians at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Their story and the tragic betrayal that led to their defeat is told, written, sung, filmed and remembered endlessly through the centuries until today.

The Chess pieces

Leonidas (Pawn) is depicted armed for battle, holding his famous shield with the Greek letter Λ (L) engraved. The King represents the famous demigod hero Hercules, son of Zeus, and the Knight the famous winged horse Pegasus. The Queen is a replica of the famous Aphrodite of Milos statue (200 B.C.) and the Bishop is Apollo, from the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (460 B.C.). The Rook is inspired by the Doric pillars of the Parthenon on the Acropolis (440 B.C.).
