In Obsession, you assume the role of the head of a respected, but struggling, family estate in mid-19th century Victorian England. After several lean decades, the family's fortunes are finally looking up! Your goal is to improve your estate to gain higher standing with the most influential families in Derbyshire.
The game spans 16 to 20 turns where players build a deck of British gentry, renovate their estate by acquiring building tiles from a centralized building market, and manipulate an extensive staff of butlers, housekeepers, underbutlers, maids, valets, and footmen, using a unique worker placement mechanism. By successfully hosting prestigious social activities such as fox hunts, musical recitals, billiards, political debates, and grand balls, players increase their wealth, reputation, and connections among the elite.
Each turn, players choose a building tile representing a room or outdoor space in and around their 19th-century British country estate. The chosen tile dictates which event can be hosted and which guests can be invited. However, players must carefully plan to have the right staff available to service the event and support the guests as needed. The rewards for success are new investment opportunities, allowing for further renovation of the estate, increased prestige in the county, a growing circle of influential acquaintances, and a larger and well-trained household staff.
Throughout the game, a competitive courtship for the hand of the county's most eligible young lord and lady unfolds, presenting specific renovation and reputation goals. The player who best meets these goals while accumulating victory points will win the wealthy darling's hand and the game.
