Step into a world of color and form in the board game "Avant Carde," where you and your fellow players become curators of your own cubist art exhibitions. The goal is to accumulate an impressive collection of artworks through skillful play and strategic choices. The game begins with each player receiving a deck of ten so-so cards: 1s and 2s in six different, non-matching colors, and four high-value cards, each in a different color. Draw a hand of seven cards and create the best possible exhibition by matching colors and numbers.
For each card you play, you earn $1. You can buy new cards from the gallery piles where the cost increases with the value – a card worth 2 costs $2, one worth 3 costs $3, and so on. Once per round, you can move the top card of one of the gallery piles to the bottom, offering strategic opportunities. If you don't spend all your money and don't already have a change token, you can take one from the bank. The change token is worth $1 when you use it. Complete the turn by discarding played cards and cards in hand, drawing a new hand of seven cards, and shuffling your discard pile if necessary.
Six patrons, numbered from 2 to 7, provide extra powers in the game. For example, if you played the most 2s
you get an extra dollar to spend; a 3
allows you to discard a card from your hand or played area; and with a 4
you can change its color or number. If you earn at least $6 during a round, you win an award, and higher amounts yield more awards. When the pile of awards runs out, the player with the most awards wins. "Avant Carde" offers an evening filled with both art and strategic decisions!
