Hanami

Hanami is a strategic board game by Reiner Knizia where players celebrate spring in Japan by trying to find the best picnic spots under blooming cherry blossom trees. The game is a reinterpretation of the classic Samurai, but with a softer theme, new maps, and a gameplay experience that blends abstract strategy with a clear presence on the board.
In Hanami, players place tokens representing picnic blankets in parks around Japan and Tokyo. Each token shows both the strength of your group and which activity it is linked to: watching the cherry blossoms, eating onigiri, or enjoying the evening under the lanterns. When activity markers are surrounded, it is determined who has the most influence around them, and that player takes the marker.
The beauty of Hanami is how simple it is to understand what you want to do, but how difficult it can be to do it at the right time. You want to collect the right activity markers, block your opponents' plans, and at the same time not reveal too clearly what you are aiming for yourself. It is a strategy game where every tile placement feels important, especially as the game board starts to fill up and the best spots quickly disappear.
The game includes two different ways to play. The Japan map allows players to experience the classic Samurai feeling in a new guise, while the Tokyo setup offers new challenges, abilities, and tiles. This makes Hanami an elegant choice for players who like Knizia's clean design, but also for groups who want a beautiful and tactical social game with adequate depth.
Hanami is particularly suitable for game nights with players who appreciate area control, smart timing, and a board where positioning means everything. It's not a heavy game, but it rewards those who read the situation well and find the perfect spot before the park gets full.
