Mountain Goats

Mountain Goats is a fast and approachable dice game where players race to move their goats to the tops of six different mountains to score points. It’s a light family board game that mixes simple math, timing, and playful player interaction into something that feels both relaxed and surprisingly tactical.

Each turn, players roll four dice and split them into groups to climb different mountains. Reaching the summit is important because that’s where the points are scored — but there’s only room for one goat at the top of each mountain. If another player reaches the summit after you, your goat gets knocked off and has to start climbing again from the bottom.

That constant push and pull gives the game its charm. Mountain Goats never feels overly punishing, but players always need to pay attention to each other’s positions and decide when to focus on scoring versus disrupting an opponent. Since rounds move quickly, the game creates plenty of memorable moments where a perfect setup disappears with a single roll of the dice.

Underneath the simple rules, there’s also more strategy than expected. Choosing which mountains to prioritize and when to take risks becomes increasingly important as the game progresses. It works equally well as a family game or as a quick filler between heavier strategy games for more experienced groups.
