Description
Hanami is a strategic board game by Reiner Knizia where players celebrate springtime in Japan by claiming the best picnic spots beneath blooming sakura trees. It is a fresh reimagining of the classic game Samurai, now with a gentler theme, new maps and a clean tactical feel that makes every tile placement matter.
In Hanami, players place tiles representing picnic blankets in parks across Japan and Tokyo. Each tile shows both the strength of your group and its preferred activity: viewing sakura blossoms, eating onigiri or spending an evening beneath the lanterns. When Activity Tokens become surrounded by player tiles, the player with the strongest influence around them collects the token.
What makes Hanami work so well is the balance between simple rules and sharp decisions. You want to collect the right Activity Tokens, interfere with your opponents’ plans and avoid making your own intentions too obvious. It is a strategy game where the board gradually tightens, and the best spaces tend to disappear just when you need them most.
The game includes two distinct ways to play. The Japan map offers the classic Samurai ruleset in a new setting, while the Tokyo setup adds fresh challenges, new abilities and new tiles. That gives Hanami a nice amount of variety, especially for players who enjoy Knizia’s elegant designs but want a game with a warm, inviting theme.
Hanami is a strong fit for game nights with players who enjoy area control, careful timing and tactical positioning. It is not a heavy board game, but it rewards thoughtful play, good reading of the table and finding the perfect picnic spot before the park fills up.
