Memoir '44: BattleMap #3 Sword of Stalingrad

The third installment in our Memoir '44 Battle Maps series includes 2 Overlord scenarios, 2 standard scenarios, new summary cards for previously published Battle Maps and the Mediterranean Theater expansion. For the first time, it also includes additional cards for gameplay - the new Combat Deck specifically designed for urban warfare.

Sword of Stalingrad

By the end of August 1942, German troops had reached the Volga, north of Stalingrad. In a few days, the 4th Panzer Army had made it to the river south of the city, effectively trapping many soldiers of the Soviet 62nd Army. Stalin’s order from July 27th - "Not a step back!" - was no longer just a duty but a necessity, and its slogan "There is no land beyond the Volga!" was the harsh reality facing all the city's inhabitants.

After personally witnessing the devastating effectiveness of German blitzkrieg tactics on the Russian steppe, Lieutenant General Chuikov turned the bombing of the city to his advantage. By establishing his defense lines in bombed-out buildings with strategically important streets and squares within sight, he ordered the Soviet troops to "hug the enemy." By always keeping the front lines as close to the Germans as physically possible, sometimes just a floor or a doorway away, he managed to counter much of the Germans’ firepower and combined arms superiority.
