Faiyum

Faiyum, a basin oasis, was artificially built 3,900 years ago by expanding the Bahr Yussef canal connected to the Nile to create a regulated floodplain. During the Middle Kingdom of Egypt, this swampy land was slowly transformed into agricultural land under the patronage of Pharaohs such as Amenemhet III and Sesostris II. They commanded their advisors to build a system of canals and dikes to reclaim the land surrounded by desert and inhabited by crocodiles, turning it into Egypt’s granary.

Now, under the reign of Amenemhet III, you are the Pharaoh’s advisor, tasked with harvesting goods, building roads, founding settlements, and much more for the benefit of Faiyum! You are provided with the necessary labor, resources, and money, meaning that if another advisor needs to use "your" roads, farms, and other buildings, they can because everything you build is owned by the Pharaoh. The only thing you will own is the one thing that matters: the Pharaoh's respect.

Faiyum is a strategic game for planning enthusiasts. The basic rules are simple: Play your cards, one by one, onto your personal discard pile. After playing some or all of your cards, you take them back into your hand in "reverse" order of play, so it's important to play them in the right sequence. Newly purchased cards go directly into your hand, so timing when to acquire and play them is also crucial. Each card has easy-to-understand actions, but only by creating the best combined "engine" will you become a master advisor for Faiyum.

This game features a card mechanism reminiscent of deck-building games and a market principle successfully used in Power Grid. Acquire more and more valuable cards and utilize the structures built on the game board to your advantage—in other words, for your reputation. Ultimately, the most cunning advisor who creates the best card combinations will win Faiyum.
