Tranquility: The Ascent is a standalone sequel to Tranquility, in which players work cooperatively to complete a grid of numbers while climbing the mountain. The game begins at the foot of the mountain, where players will build a pyramid-shaped grid from the base to the summit. The base is nine cards wide, the row above it is eight, and so on until the top row, which consists of a single summit card that is played once the rest of the grid is complete.
On your turn, you must play a card to the mountain or discard two cards. Cards are numbered 1 to 12 and feature one of three different terrain types. You may not play cards with the same terrain type adjacent to each other, and you must discard cards equal to the difference between numbers played adjacent to each other, for example, three cards are required to place a 7 next to a 4.
Rows are filled from left to right, and the numbers on the cards can ascend, descend, or remain the same. Rows can contain any number, but with one restriction: the number on a terrain card must be equal to or higher than the row number, which means a 1 can only be played in the first row, while numbers 8-12 can be played on any row.
Players can begin a new row once at least the first two cards of the row below it have been placed. Cards must always be "supported" by the two cards directly below them, but they do not relate to the rows above or below in any way.
If players finish building the mountain and top it with a summit card, they win; if a player cannot make a move on their turn, everyone loses.
Tranquility: The Ascent includes three mini-expansion modules that can be added separately or together. "The Green Path" requires players to create a continuous path from the bottom to the top of the mountain. The "Panorama" module gives players specific number series to photograph. And finally, "The Mountain Goats" are to be helped up to the top where the grass is greener in the final module.
