In Tokaido, the game board is a linear path with potential action spaces where players move forward to perform various actions. The player currently last on the path gets to make their move by advancing to a desired action space and performing that action. This creates an interesting dynamic where players must choose between moving slowly to get more turns or traveling faster to get ahead of other players to coveted action spaces.
The action spaces in the game offer a variety of actions, all of which score points in different, but relatively equitable ways. Some spots allow players to collect money, while others offer the opportunity to spend this money to gain points. There are also spots where players can engage in various types of set-collecting that award points, and other spots simply give points just for stopping there, or provide a random action from all other types.
