Mountain Goats is a light and fast-paced dice game where players try to get their goats to the top of six different mountains to collect points. It's a family-friendly board game that combines simple math, timing, and small mischievous moves in a format that's easy to learn but surprisingly hard to master.
Each turn involves rolling four dice and combining the results in the smartest possible way to climb the mountains. The higher up your goats are, the better your chances of collecting points – but the top of each mountain is crowded. Only one goat can stand there at a time, and if someone else reaches the top, your goat is pushed down and has to start over.
It's precisely this mix of tactical planning and minor setbacks that makes Mountain Goats so charming. The game never feels truly mean-spirited, but players are constantly forced to keep an eye on each other's positions and decide when it's worth going for points or instead blocking someone else. Since the rounds are quick, there's often a lot of laughter when a perfect position suddenly disappears with a single roll of the dice.
Despite its simple setup, there's more strategy here than one might initially think. Choosing which mountains to focus on and when to push your luck requires good timing and a bit of risk-taking. This makes the game equally appreciated among families and experienced players who want a quick and interactive filler game between heavier strategy games.
