October 1740. The 23-year-old Maria Theresa ascends the Austrian throne. Frederick of Prussia invades Silesia, and weeks later Bavaria, France, and Saxony also attack, triggering the War of the Austrian Succession. But the attackers underestimate Maria Theresa's strength of character and stubbornness.

MARIA is primarily a 3-player game where one plays Austria, one plays France and Bavaria, and one plays Prussia and the Pragmatic Army. The game is based on FRIEDRICH but has its own character with politics, hussars, forced marches, and imperial elections. Strategic maneuvers and political intrigues are key to victory.

The game can be played in a shorter introductory variant or a longer advanced variant with campaigns in Bohemia and Flanders.
