In the 24th century, humanity begins to terraform the planet Mars. Large corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate enormous projects to raise the temperature, oxygen level, and ocean coverage until the environment is habitable. In Terraforming Mars, you play as one of these corporations, working together in the terraforming process, but competing to gain victory points awarded for your contribution to the terraforming, as well as for developing human infrastructure in the solar system and performing other commendable actions.
Players purchase unique project cards (from over two hundred different ones) for their hands. The cards provide immediate bonuses and increase your production of various resources. Many cards also have requirements and become playable when the temperature, oxygen level, or ocean coverage increases sufficiently. Buying cards is costly, so it's a matter of balancing between buying and playing cards. Standard projects are always available to complement your cards. Your basic income and basic points are based on your Terraform Rating. But your income is supplemented by your production, and you also receive VPs from many other sources.
Each player keeps track of their production and resources on their player boards, and the game uses six types of resources: MegaCredits, steel, titanium, plants, energy, and heat. On the game board, you compete for the best locations for your city tiles, ocean tiles, and greenery tiles. You also compete for various milestones and awards worth many VPs. Each round is called a generation and consists of the following phases:
Player order shifts clockwise.
Research Phase: All players buy cards from four privately drawn ones.
Action Phase: Players take turns performing 1-2 actions from these options: Play a card, claim a milestone, fund an award, use a standard project, convert plants to greenery tiles (and raise the oxygen level), convert heat to temperature increase, and use an in-play card action. Turns continue around the table (sometimes multiple rounds) until all players have passed.
Production Phase: Players receive resources according to their Terraform Rating and production parameters.
When the three global parameters (temperature, oxygen, ocean) have reached their goals, terraforming is complete and the game ends after that generation. Count your Terraform Rating and other VPs to determine which corporation wins!
