"Magical Girls" wrestle with destiny in this multi-genre roleplaying game. "Girl By Moonlight" explores the heartbreak of denying who you truly are, fighting for what you believe in, and the overwhelming power of building relationships while embracing your true self.
As a "Magical Girl," you cling to your tragic struggles and seek defiant triumphs against the darkness of an oppressive society. The game reinterprets the classic examples of the genre to create an allegory for self-discovery and queer identity. The text uses 'magical girl' as a shorthand, but your "magical girls" don't necessarily have to be girls, but rather individuals whose identities place them on the margins.
Designer Andrew Gillis takes the rules from the acclaimed "Blades in the Dark" and adapts them to create a unique gaming experience that represents the breadth of the "Magical Girl" genre.
"Girl By Moonlight" draws inspiration from many sources. As you and your group play, you'll choose a Series Playset and customize it with special rules, themes, threats, and more to make your game truly unique.
The four main Series Playsets include:
At The Abyss: Heroic "Magical Girls" fight to reclaim a corrupted world. Inspired by "Sailor Moon" and "Steven Universe."
On A Star Ocean: Mech pilots fight against Leviathan extinction and are inspired by "Diebuster" and "The Vision of Escaflowne."
Beneath A Rotting Sky: Deals with tragedy and betrayal where "Magical Girls" are doomed to an inevitable fate. Inspired by "Puella Magi Madoka Magica."
In A Labyrinth of Dreams: Draws inspiration from "Paprika" and "Serial Experiments." Central themes are desire, mass culture, and ideas that take on a life of their own.
