Tamea has never felt at home in the role of a rich nobleman's daughter, with expensive dresses and jewels. She'd rather have practiced sword techniques with her older brother. But one day, her brother is called away on a secret mission outside the city walls, and shortly thereafter Tamea's tattoo begins to burn like fire. The tattoo that both she and her brother received at birth, to link them together. She realizes that the time for sword training is over, and soon she has left her safe life behind to seek answers about her brother's whereabouts, and why the tattoo is calling to her.
But outside the city wall, she encounters a reality far removed from the disciplined and orderly combat training she had in the castle courtyard. There is no chivalric code of honor in a hungry swamp worm, no more than there is mercy in the infected festering wounds that a bloodthirsty goblin's sharp jaws create.
She soon realizes that she is helpless on her own in the wilderness, and is forced to team up with Gizma the duck and an elf named Verven. But can she truly trust her traveling companions? And how will she be able to find her missing brother, when she can barely make it alive to the nearest inn in the neighboring village?
The book is based on the world created in the role-playing game "Drakar och Demoner" (Dragons and Demons), which became a phenomenon in the early 80s. With the relaunch of the game, interest in "Drakar och Demoner" has seen a strong resurgence. With excitement, adventure, and skillful storytelling, the intrigues and mystery in "Uppvaknandet" (The Awakening) deepen. With liberating humor and the best from the role-playing world, the book is also a welcome read in the fantasy genre, which often struggles with stereotypical battles between good and evil, and above all, battles between different races. In the "Drakar och Demoner" role-playing universe, it's rarely important whether you are an elf, dwarf, orc, human, or duck. The only thing that matters is the adventure, the dangers that must be overcome, and the treasures you want to find. And of course, not dying in the process.
"Uppvaknandet" also contains a completely new role-playing adventure created by Fria Ligan so that readers can first experience the stories of the three adventurers and then embark on an adventure themselves in the world of "Drakar och Demoner".
Emmelie P. Uggla writes for both young people and adults and is a true gaming enthusiast herself. Johan Egerkrans is an illustration giant in the fantasy world and has created illustrations for both the book and the role-playing game.
