Patience, or card solitaire, is a collective term for card games where the goal is to arrange cards in a certain systematic pattern – most often played by a single player. The genre has its origins in 18th-century Germany and Scandinavia and has since spread worldwide.

The word patience comes from the original perception that the games train patience, while solitaire became the most common term in North America during the 20th century. In English-speaking contexts, solitaire is often used as a synonym for the popular game Klondike, even though there are hundreds of different variants.

In practice, patience is used more often in the United Kingdom and solitaire in the USA and Canada. Many games can also be played by several people, although most are intended for one.
