Four millennia ago, on the east bank of the Nile, the foundations for the Temple of Amun-Ra were laid. Over two thousand years, the temple complex gradually expanded and became known as "The Most Selected Place" (Ipet-Isut), as the largest religious building in the world. Today, the site is known as Karnak, located in Luxor in modern-day Egypt.
Join the ancient pharaohs' quest to create and grow one of the world's most impressive sites, in honor of the Egyptian gods Horus, Ra, Hathor, Bastet, Thoth, and Osiris. You must carefully balance your actions and prepare for the justice of the goddess Ma'at.
The game board in Tekhenu: Obelisk of the Sun is divided into six sections, each associated with an Egyptian god. In the center stands an impressive obelisk (Tekhenu) which casts its shadow over various parts of the game board. The game board is divided into sunny, shaded, and dark sections, depending on how the obelisk casts its shadow at a given moment. As the game progresses, the sun's rotation changes, affecting which sections are sunny, shaded, or dark.
The game unfolds over several rounds. Each round, players draft dice and perform actions based on the dice value and the section from which the die was drafted. The dice come in five colors, and each die is considered Pure, Tainted, or Forbidden depending on the die's color and the obelisk's shadow position. You may never draft Forbidden dice, but are free to draft Pure or Tainted dice.
When drafting dice, you must consider both the availability of dice and which value die to draft. You must also balance your Pure and Tainted actions to have a favorable position in the turn order.
When you draft a die, you can perform an action depending on the section you took the die from. Each action corresponds to an Egyptian god. Instead of a god action, you can choose to produce, generating resources based on the die's color and value, but beware of overproduction as this can lead to Greed and increase your Taint!
During the game, there are two scoring phases where players earn victory points based on the workshops, quarries, buildings, statues, and pillars they have built, as well as the happiness and production capacity of their people. Players must also have enough resources to support their population, otherwise they will face negative consequences.
